9 a.m. – Awareness Walk

10:30 a.m. – Outdoor Service

Lunch to follow, $5 per person

National Cancer Survivors Day® is an annual Celebration of Life that is held in hundreds of communities nationwide, and around the world, on the first Sunday in June. It is a celebration for those who have survived, an inspiration for those recently diagnosed, a gathering of support for families, and an outreach to the community.

Hope Center, a Ministry of Lowell Church of Christ, is hosting “A Journey of Hope” on Sunday, June 4th in Lowell to celebrate Northwest Indiana survivors.  A 2.5 mile neighborhood walk through Lowell will begin at Hope Center at 9 a.m. to honor and celebrate cancer survivors. Transportation for survivors who are unable to complete the walk route will be offered by volunteers.  Hope Center is located inside Lowell Church of Christ at 299 N. Burr in Lowell.

The celebration is family-friendly. Participants are invited to decorate a wagon or stroller and make a home-made sign to honor survivors during the walk.  Surviving family members are invited to make memorial signs.

Cancer survivors are encouraged to register for the event as soon as possible.  Complimentary survivor t-shirts will be provided for those who register by May 10th.

As part of our celebration, our community is invited to the 10:30 a.m. worship service at Lowell Church of Christ on June 4th. “Our outdoor service is a celebration of life for all cancer survivors.  We will have a special time during the service to honor and pray over survivors and their caregivers,” said Lowell Church of Christ pastor, Chuck Hochmuth.  “All faiths are welcome.”
Participants are invited to a picnic lunch following the worship service. Lunch will be available for $5 a person. Pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs, chips, salads and desserts will be offered.  The maximum cost will be limited to $25 per family.

Participants are asked to make event reservations by May 10th.  Payment may be made Monday through Friday in the Lowell Church of Christ office from 8:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.  The church is located at 299 N. Burr in Lowell.  Payment will also be accepted after Sunday services at Hope Center, located in Lowell Church of Christ.  Download the reservation forms at lowellchurch.org/hopecenter.
Hope Center is ordering t-shirts for this special event on June 4th. The cost for a shirt is $10, but the form must be turned in by May 10th to be guaranteed a t-shirt.

National Cancer Survivors Day® is a day for everyone, whether a cancer survivor, a family member, friend, or medical professional. This day provides an opportunity for all people living with a history of cancer to connect with each other, celebrate milestones, and recognize those who have supported them along the way.
“On National Cancer Survivors Day®, the community will gather to honor cancer survivors and to show the world that life after a cancer diagnosis can be fruitful, rewarding, and even inspiring,” said Hochmuth.

Hope Center was founded to provide emotional and spiritual support to Northwest Indiana families facing cancer. Hope Center offers support groups for the entire family; survivors, caregivers, and children. Hope Center provides educational materials and resource information. Family fun nights are held throughout the year.  All programs are offered free of charge by the non-profit organization to families facing cancer.
